Has anyone made their own ironing board?

I have an old TV table that I want to make into a little ironing station. The top is wood. Are there any suggestions about what I put on top of it to make it an ironing surface. I saw somewhere on the web to use insulbrite, is this necessary? I was thinking about using a few layers of left over batting and then making a fabric cover that I can remove and wash if needed. Thanks!!!

I did an 18x18 one - took two layers of left over (can you believe LEFTOVER?) warm and natural batting, covered it with white muslin and tacked it underneath. Works great for those little presses after sewing.

That sounds like a wonderful ironing station. What a great idea.

I have started looking for a lonely TV tray at Goodwill! I have only been able to find a set of four and I do NOT need that many ironing boards, and the kids set at the kitchen table to work on their stuff so having three extra would just take up much needed space in our small apartment!

Walmart here sells the wooden tv trays separately. I made an ironing table from one and it works great to put by the machine. I didn't cover mine though. I had one of the old table top ironing boards made from very heavy pressed board. I took off the legs and covered it with one layer of thin cotton batting and cotton canvas using a staple gun. I then wet the cover until damp and ironed it dry. It shrunk to make a very tight fit. I set that on top to the tv table. The old board is so heavy it doesn't slip or move.

Walmart usually sells single tv trays. That is a great idea.

I use the top of my front load washer :oops: :) and use one of those portable ironing squares.

I got my tv tray from Wal-mart. Bought a cheapy replacement ironing board cover, put some batting on top, cut the cheapy cover so that it wraps around the top and then stapled it to the underneath. Nice for the small jobs and to set next to machine.

I have a small ironing board I'd purchased for traveling in the motor home. I took the cover off, padded it with warm & natural batting, and covered with canvas. It works BETTER than my regular sewing machine!

Oh - if you can't find a single table at Walmart.....check out Walgreens. I saw some in there a few weeks ago.
