I want to make a quilt for DD to reflect memories of her Alaskan cruise. I located this fabric from a couple quilt shops in Alaska. I would like the quilt to look like waves and plan on appliqueing a whale breaching from a photo that she had captured. I need your ideas for a quilt pattern and also your input on the fabrics please. I can't wait to hear what your suggestions might be. Love the board =).

I did this quilt with fabric that depicted San Diego, so I did the background as a bargello, and on the water I appliquéd a battleship that is docked here.

I was thinking the same thing, a bargello.

There are literally thousands of different ways you could handle this. In the end, you will have to figure out what YOU want. How representative, how many aspects of Alaska you want to show, etc. If I had been a quilter when my parents visited Alaska, I think I might have done a RxR, with whales breaching, Denali, totem poles, native patterns and, of course, other wildlife, bears, moose, salmon, etc.

No idea about the pattern, but just love the top row of fabrics. Yummm...

Thank You for your suggestion, a great option.

Do you have the Pattern Name that you used to make this?

I didn't really use a pattern. I just used the bargello technique randomly.
