Best stuffing? Need ideas
 

what's your favorite to use? i am in the process of making a "dog bone pillow". i would like to know what's the best stuffing you have used -- i'm wondering something heavy like beads, [like for a beanbag -- but will they be comfortable enough to put your head on? has anyone used something soft similar to sawdust -- worried about being able to wash it & it will hold its shape????? thanks in advance for help!

sawdust type is too lumpy, i pick it by the way it feels and bounces back after grabbing a hand ful of it in the bag. you can do it thru the plastic wrap. I think it's poly fil brand I use most.

I prefer to use Fairfield Polyfil stuffing--I have used a number of others but found them too lumpy and not as easy to work with.

Anytime you are making a pillow--create a piece just as you would have when you sandwich a quilt. Any old piece for the backing and then make your pillow treating that as the outside. I will give you a smooth surface on the pillow and also requires less stuffing material

I just pinch any bag of stuffing between my fingers, and rub then together. The stuffing will either slide back and forth as if lubricated, or it will not slide well. The stuff that slides the best will be less likely to bunch and become lumpy or flat with use. I learned that from Eleanor Peace Bailey, (a world famous custom doll maker and writer), that she discussed at a seminar she held at a local store. I hate when pillows or "stuffies" go flat! Price is not always a good way to judge this product. Some of the worst lumping stuffing I have bought was the more expensive.

I have always used the Fairfield Polyfil stuffing. Have you thought of using the type of rice that you can heat in the microwave??

When my daughter makes what we call "Hot Rocks", pillow types we can warm up in the microwave, she uses rice. She's used to use corn or beans but we found them kind of smelly when hot. A dog bone shaped pillow would be great for my neck!!!

I have a rounded neck pillow that surrounds my neck. It is stuffed with foam and I love it.

I make dog beds for the ASPCA and stuff them with fabric scraps. They wash like a dream and are light weight.
