Advice for Success with Laura Heine collage quilt techniques
When my sister visits we hit my 4 favorite LQS's. At the first one there was a workshop day for Laura Heine collage quilt pattern projects begun in a class a week earlier. I was visiting the Grandest Grandbaby so missed it. I did not need to add more projects to my overflowing project cabinet, but could not resist! Love her patterns and bought the seahorse and some fabrics to start including a beautiful ombré for the background fabric. If you have or are currently working on one of her collage patterns I would really appreciate any advice, tips, definite do's and don'ts if you care to share.

I just did this class. I did Lulu the elephant. I would Not use all flower fabrics. any fabric with motion works. I would plan on 5 colors that blend one into another. Like pink with green, then pink, green and a 3rd color and so on. I loved the class but the cutting was tedious.

Just curious... can you explain why you wouldn't use all flower fabrics? I'm taking a class on a similar project later this month.

Sorry, I have never heard of her before. I get most of my info from this board. Sounds like fun!

A friend just gave me one of her collage patterns, Emerson the dog. I would live to take the class and get it done but it's offered on days I cannot go, and the LQS is closing the end of August so I doubt it is offered again before they close. The shop sample is the pickup truck and adorable! I've picked up some Kaffe Fassett prints to start getting ready to do mine. Need to find a background print.

I was hoping there would be some help on her website, but there isn't. I assume this is because information & guidance works better in a class setting and she gives good overall instructions in the pattern. This is just a real departure from anything I've worked on. Thanks Patski, I was thinking I wouldn't do all flowers, but am definitely staying with organic patterns since I'm doing Ebba the Seahorse-I want to hang it for the fall season so leaning in that direction for colors. Going to be challenging, that's for sure!

I just purchased the Perfect Form pattern. Why? It just spoke to me, but I have started to accumulate floral fabric and have a long way to go. No one offers a class in my area so I will be on my own to complete this. I will keep checking this thread to hear what suggestions are offered.

I just finished Old Blue the truck of Laura's designs. I didn't stick to florals and my instructor(from a local shop) encouraged us to use other things if we were inspired. So, I also have a cow, snail, several birds and butterflies and some blue apples! Make it your own!

Does she give you any advice, tips, definite do's and don'ts in her pattern? I would never attempt this without a pattern. It looks like she has the technique mastered and I would love to learn from her. I might try the perfect form or the piggies if your feedback is this is a well written pattern. Keep us up to date with your progress. Would love to see how yours turns out. Good Luck. (you are very adventurous and brave)

I cannot answer about Laura's method, but Susan Carlson shares her method on her blog. Be sure to check out the videos on Stevie the Crocodile!
