I've never seen anything like this before. Any ideas?

Very interesting.! I can't tell from the angle of the photo ... does the foot & needle mechanism have something more to it - an additional piece, that isn't usually part of a standard sewing machine?

Please be sure to keep us updated - if/when you solve this mystery.! :)

We just had this discussion on VSS a few days ago. It's a Singer 24 chain stitch machine. To give you an idea of it's size, the case is a little smaller than a FW case, but this machine weighs about 22lbs.

It's listed on shopgoodwill. There are more photos. I've never seen one before...not that I'm an expert by any means.

Thanks Cari. I'm going to look it up. It's going for $200ish on shopgoodwill.

Wow! what an interesting machine. What would someone use a chain-stitch machine for?

It would be great for basting seams. Chain stitch is very easy to undo.

Thanks, Pennycandy, never thought of that.
