I finished my Marimekko quilt top and need advise!
10 Attachment(s)
I finally finished my Marimekko quilt top. I chose the HST block method for my corners. They are very imperfect, but so am I. lol It ended up being 96x96.
This is the biggest quilt I have done and the Marimekko fabric is not extremely lightweight or soft. I ordered the silk batting and I hope I can squeeze the quilt sandwich in my Husqvarna Opal sewing machine. I wanted to try my luck at FMQ the loops and hearts in the picture. Should I do this all over or mix with stitch in the ditch or another FMQ? I need help deciding what to do? I need advise on my quilt backing. I wanted the softest available, but the minky is only 90 inches, so I would have to piece it. I ordered a sample and it is absolutely yummy soft and lightweight. The other choices are cottons. I love the amethyst blender. Both the cottons are 106 inches, so I wouldn't have to piece it. What do you think? I would use cotton, but are you sure those dark colors won't shadow on the front? Just a thought....

Janan, I love your quilt, it has such a wonderful personality. If this is the first quilt you have ever done on your Opal, use cotton backing as the minky is a bit unruly because it stretches. Use the backing color that you like and you will be much happier with it. Please show us after you get it quilted. Brenda

That purple fabric looks like a batik to me. If so, I would highly recommend washing it before using it as I have found that the purple batiks will bleed.

Colorful top! Love that purple Fossil Fern fabric!

Your quilt is wonderful. For backing, I would use the predominate color on the front, even if you have to piece it. As far as the quilting, I await to see what the experts here say. I think most of them would tell you to stabilize it by stitching in the ditch around the bigger blocks and then do your FMQ. Good luck with your quilting. I know you will do fine.

Great quilt--with all that white on front I'd be a little reluctant to use a dark batik on the back, though. Will be interested to hear your thoughts on the silk bat--never used it but have heard it's great.

I would be so careful with picking your backing. If you use a dark backing, choose your batting carefully otherwise, the backing may show thru the white fabric.

Personally, I would not consider Minky for that size of a project. I love your quilt and the fabrics you've chosen. If it were my quilt, I would keep the back a lighter color -maybe a 2 color print, white and whatever (I would go for yellow myself, but I love yellow). Can't comment much on the actual quilting, but I think an all over pattern as you have shown would be fine. You could also go with flannel on the back if you want that cozy feel.

I am beginning to think you are right. I love the purple, but I will look for another more softer color. It is hard when there is nearly every color in the quilt and all the colors are bright.
