Women gymnists at olympics
dd just stated this as we were watching olympics....she heard some commentator mention that the women in the gymnastic category can only compete in two olympics. If that's true I wonder why. I tried searching on the net but couldn't find any info on this limitation of participation. Anyone here know if that's true or did she perhaps mishear comment made.....

According to my DH there isn't any rule, it is what their bodies can do. It is so strenuous and they start so very young, not to mention they have younger ones coming up all the time. Some bodies strengthen with time, but in gymnastics with all the pounding it is just more difficult, over the age of 25 their bodies are pretty used up for the competition.
Actually, there is a 41 yr. old female competing tonight in the Vault from Uzbekistan. This is here 7th time to the Olympics. |
They start young....pre-puberty. Imagine being in your 20's with a more developed, mature body. Balance and center of gravity has to play a huge role in how gymnasts are able to do what they do. It has to become more dangerous as time goes by. Ten years after graduation Can you still get into your high school clothes? ;)

You r all right.....she did misunderstand the comment.....and I get aches and pains just watching the things they do.....

I'm thinking your DD understood part of the comment correctly and perhaps didn't hear it all. If I am correct, and I may not be, after the team competition, the individual girls are only allowed to compete in two events, vault, high bars, floor exercise and beam of these, for an individual award. But you DD ay have heard it all correctly. I'm not an expert on the Olympics, but enjoy almost all of the events but my two favorites, are the gymnastics and all swimming and diving events- being a past swimmer myself (NOT in Olympics-but n college). I am so pleased our US teams in both of these have done so well and am proud of all the US teams. I admire ALL of the athletes who are competing and wish all countries could get along as well as the athletes seem to.

They can compete in as many Olympics as they qualify for. There is a gymnast that is 41 and she has competed in a lot of them. I think what they are talking about is that only two gymnasts can compete in individual all-around.

One of this years participants is 41 years old competing in her 4 th olympics.

I think it great to have the older olympians. As others have mentioned the 41-year old gymnast is in her 7th Olympics...don't know much about but heard of a 40's cyclist (a woman I think), and Michael Phelps is 33! Just amazing and does give me a little encouragement to do my little bit of working out.....with emphasis on "little bit" :)
