quilt classes
 

The Kansas City Regional Quilt Fest is in June and has posted their class offerings--which are well priced. I'm taking a class from a Judy Niemeyer certified teacher, Judy Kunkel, on the Total Eclipse quilt--little nervous about it as I'm not a frequent paper piecer. the prep instructions mention batiks--my question is would you recommend batiks for a Judy Niemeyer pattern? I've seen some of the Niemeyer designed fabric and it isn't batik.

I'm also taking a Jamie Wallen class and one with Tia Curtis--both long arm classes. My daughter is taking one on using color with Kerr & Ringle , a Zentangle thread painting on the DSM and another one (you'd think I'd remember since I paid for them! LOL!)

So batik or no?? I like it, but have never used it with paper piecing.

I love batiks for paper piecing. My first choice!

I think I'm going to use batiks in all my paper piecing from now on - you can use either side and paper piecing has enough problems in it, without worrying about using the proper side of the fabric!

I've done one Judy Niemeyer pattern, Fire Island Hosta. I didn't use batiks.
Won a 3rd place ribbon at the local quilt show.

I think batiks are actually a better choice for paper piecing than regular quilting cottons, because on nearly all batiks, the back is indistinguishable from the front. One of the more common mistakes that beginning paper-piecers make is cutting the fabric upside down.

If you're taking the class from a certified JN teacher, you'll do just fine. Have fun!!

Judy Niemeyer recommends batiks for her paper piecing patterns, and I personally really like them. You don't have to worry about right/wrong side, they look nice, they're non-directional, and the tighter weave helps stabilize all the bias edges as you sew (especially on big pieces).

Don't be nervous about the class - I don't know your instructor, but when I took a Judy N. Paper piecing class the instructor was super great. She made sure we were all doing well and understanding the process. There were a couple ladies who had tried paper piecing in the past and just couldn't get the hang of it; by the end, even they were enjoying themselves. Your other classes sound like fun, as well. Have a great time!

you all have convinced me--batiks it is! I hadn't thought about the fact that I wouldn't have to worry about the side I'm using and the tightness of the weave making any bias more stable--was just worried about the tightness of the weave making it harder to get paper off--but that's not a problem, right? Gay--that link to the sunflower quilt is the same pattern we are using. thanks all!

I took a class from Weeks Ringler in 2014 and thought it was the best class I ever took. She is so knowledgable about color and quilting and her presentation was so interesting. I would run to take another class from her. I can't imagine a class with her and her husband. Fantastic! Good luck to you and your daughter.
