How best to quilt around appliqué Q

1 Attachment(s)
Hello everybody!

I recently bought this fabric which has an appliqué design on it. I also want to use the giraffe fabric (soft and snuggly) on the back. It may not be a perfect match, but I already have the fabric and really want to use it.

Should I quilt over the dashes? Or do a meandering stitch (the only one I know lol) overall.

Question: What color thread should I use? Dashes or meandering?

Not sure I understand your question. Are you going to cut out the animal motifs on the first fabric and applique them to a background? or do you just plan to use that fabric as a whole cloth and quilt around the animals? Either way, if you want them to actually be applique, or just look like appliqued, I'd outline them first and then do a denser fill to make them pop up as applique. I'd use a neutral, sage like green probably if using this as a whole cloth. If you plan to cut these out and attach to another background, then I'd match that background.

I would use it as a whole cloth top and meander quilt but go around the shapes with my meandering on the dashed lines. I would then go inside the shapes and outline stitch some of the inner features so it would not have big areas unquilted. An all over meander would be fine as well.

Not sure, don't think I would buy it.

Thank you, everybody!

The back will look fine with it. I agree with Tartan on how to quilt it. Go girl!

Not sure about how to quilt it but I think the backing fabric is great. I think with certain quilts things look better if they are not "matchy matchy"..

I would use Tartan's ideas for quilting the fabric. I think I would use the color thread that is in the dashed lines abound the animal features rather than a contrasting color which would conflict or nullify lines that are intended to bring out the applique look.

I agree with Tartan's quilting ideas. I would probably use a neutral thread or one matching the background.
