Singer 201-2 Question
 

Is it possible to convert a Singer 201-2 with the single lead cord and separate foot control cord to a double lead cord configuration?

I've read this several times and still don't get it. It has the plug that goes to the machine. From that plug, you have a wire that goes to the wall and one that goes to the foot or knee controller (2 wires off that plug). Do you want 2 wall cords?

I just don't get the question. (Not that I can give you an answer either way, but I'd like to understand the question.)

No. A double lead cord is a cord that plugs into the wall, and the other end has the foot controller attached. A Singer 221 has that kind of cord, as do some 15-91's and 201-2's.

I have a Singer 201-2 that has the SINGLE lead cord configuration. The foot controller cord is a separate cord that is wired into the machine. I am wondering whether or not I can remove that attached foot controller cord completely, and use the double lead cord configuration.

If the three pin socket-plug parts allows for it, yes you can rewire the whole thing after your own choice, but follow the schematics tentatively. This socket-plug part can be found if you need a particular type. It's usually models with knee lever speed control that has the single lead cord. I obviously haven't seen all variants on this. I think it's only the potted motored machines that has the fancier socket-plug with power switch.

I converted my 15-91 that has the three pin socket from the single lead configuration and a cord to the foot controller to a double lead cord. Mine is in a cabinet so I have to watch not to pinch the foot controller cord whenever I move the machine up or down.

Yes, it's very simple, all you have to do is open up the three pin terminal to remove the controller wires. They should, if everything is wired correctly, be connected to pins #1 and #2. Close up the terminal and plug the new cord to the machine. That's it.

Unfortunately, I don't have any notes. But ---- We got a machine that the wire for foot control was wired direct to motor. We tried a "normal" double lead cord and it worked. John thinks it was the 319. I was thinking that the 301 has two separate plugs for and I think again I tried the double with it and it worked, too. In essence either controller would work. John remembers us "dueling controllers."

All I can add - my DH has done this to several Singers, both external motor and potted motor styles. He's even taken some that both the cord and pedal are hardwired, and converted it to the 3 pin plug and the double lead plug.

Somewhere online he found the wiring diagram, but I don't recall where.

In case anyone needs it, the wiring order is this for a three pin set up -
light - pins 1 and 3
controller - pins 1 and 2
motor - pins 2 and 3
and if you're hard wiring it -
wall plug - pins 1 and 3
