Would Granny have done this?

My grandmother was a quilter in the old-fashioned way. All her quilts were made from scraps. Most were hand-pieced, and all were hand-quilted. I must have a lot of her ways in me. I'm always trying to re-use things. But I draw the line at sewing anything by hand!

We have pulled some fabric out of our stash to make a Christmas quilt for Emmaline, and it uses the covered corner technique for a couple of the units. I was about to throw away the waste from trimming, and thought, "These are all the same size, and they're already matched up. Couldn't I use them for something?" So, I started sewing them together, then pressed them and trimmed them all to 1 & 5/8", meaning they will finish at 1 & 1/8" in a quilt. I think they will end up as a coordinating dolly quilt. Of course my wife thinks I'm insane for messing with them, but I think it will be fun when it's finished. Besides, isn't this how quilting got its start?

These are the leftovers

Here are a couple of the blocks from the actual quilt

Looks like a cute quilt in the making and I always save those corner trimmings for the same reason you did...they are already matched up and can be made into another quilt!

Yes, scrap quilting is awesome and thrifty... but beware. It can really bog you down and tie up your quilting time fiddling with small things. But if it's what you love... go for it! I love my scrappy quilts. I feel like I'll never get my scraps all sewn up, but it's what I enjoy playing with the most.

Your package blocks are adorable, too.

I've definitely done that and used it in borders on the quilt. But Sewbizgirl is right--it can get you bogged down!

You gotta do what you gotta do. But they are right about getting bogged down. I was doing this on a quilt I am working on, and I was spending more time messing with the corners than my quilt. I have deceided that I will put all the corners in a pile and work on them when I am finished with the main quilt. Like the looks of your block. BrendaK

i don't think you're crazy... i use them too. when sewing the covered corner/snowball, i sew the second seam at the same time so that i don't have to match the triangles.

Love scrappies, and enjoy the tips you girls are giving. Your quilt is going to be so pretty.

That is cute. The scrap squares would make a nice border.

I like those blocks. I don't think you're insane.....but then I've been known to sew pieces as small as 3/4" together when making crumb fabric for some of my art quilts :p
