Stop the Quilt Drag while FMQ

1 Attachment(s)
I'd seen quilters suspend their quilts with some unusual tools to get the quilt off the table in order to stop it from weighing you down while doing free motion quilting. Well, although I normally do my quilting on my long arm, this was such a small quilt and I wasn't going to do anything special, just swirls, so I thought I'd try something.

I'd seen 'The Weightless Quilter' support system at the recent Original Sew Expo in Raleigh, NC, and I'd seen others online, but all I could think of was how they all cost more than $100. (with the exception of the personal diy with pvc pipe). I thought I'd try and rig something with what I already have.

So, I borrowed my dh's 4 foot quick clamps, which were collecting cobwebs in the garage, rummaged through my closet for the original quilt clamps for my long arm (I 'd upgraded to better ones), and poof. They work fine on my table. I never realized how much drag there was even on a quilt this small. I might even learn to like sit-down free motion. :o

Hope this helps someone else like it has helped me.

This is a fantastic fix for a drag of a problem. You are a smart one!

I do something exactly like that but I use a rollable garment rack against my sewing table. It has the ability to be locked from lowest about 1 foot above sewing table up about two more feet. I do find myself adjusting it depending on the size of the quilt. Just like you I had bungee cords and rack already so it was 0 cost and it works for me. Those are pretty nice looking clamps you used. Would love to have some if I could justify the cost.

That's pretty clever. I love the yellow painted walls, also!

This was shown and talked about on here a few years ago. I have a 2 x 4' folding table I keep at my left side and that helps.

Doesn't it take a lot of time to re position the quilt using the hanging system? I've never had much of a problem with drag to try this way.
