old quilts + codes

I attended a living museum yesterday (re-enactment village) and saw some wonderful old quilts. I took pics so I could share for those that love seeing them. They had a display for black history in our region and the underground railroad. An interesting plaquard explained the coding of quilts for this. I had heard of the log cabin being used to communicate during this time, but had no clue about the other patterns. The plaquard is a bit difficult to read in the pic, but here's the link to the website with the codes and descriptions: http://www.tomlinsonlakehiketofreedom.ca/codes-quilts

The first pic is a log cabin in this display. It was so old, they had to keep it under glass. It's unfortunately folded with a couple of items on top and the light reflection make it hard to see, but I thought I'd include it also. It seems to be made of a heavy velour-like material.

I also found the tree quilt really cool! I've never seen this pattern before. I never thought to ask how old the quilt was.

Oh! And I forgot to mention, there was a lady quilting what I thought was a quilt, but turned out to be a petticoat. We never think about this, but she said they would make quilted petticoats for warmth in the winter. It made for a beautiful and functional garment.

I have seen the tree quilt pattern before. Don't remember where or when. I think everything made in the early years were for functionality. Things were not as available as they are now.
