How important is SITD for securing before quilting?
 

If I am going to be doing an all over fmq on my quilt top, is it still necessary to stitch some grids/lines to secure the sandwich? I have spray basted and also pinned. Usually I SITD my blocks before I quilt but I wonder if it is necessary in this instance when my fm pattern will be quite close and will cover the whole quilt. Thanking you for all opinions.

If you have already pinned or spray basted I don't think stitching first is necessary.

Not necessary but can help a quilt lie much nicer if st. in d. is done first. Just my 2 cents worth!

personally, that would be overkill to me.

If the quilt is large, and will be pushed and pulled a lot through the harp of my domestic machine, I stitch grid lines with water soluble thread. They'll wash away and don't interfere with any FMQ design I might choose.

SITD is only important depending on what type of quilting you plan on doing. It can really enhance some types of quilting but if you are doing an all over design I wouldn't bother.

Thank you, Nan. I just did a king sized quilt using quilting in sections. I did not SITD and just free motion quilted over the whole thing. It came out great and lays very flat. I sort of got excited about FMQ and just forgot to SITD so I was a bit apprehensive in how the first section was going to come out but it came out great. I did spray baste each section.

I've been doing a lot of all-over woodgrain or spirals lately. I don't SITD first.

I wouldn't SID with an overall pattern.

What kind of batting is in it? A loft higher than 1/8" might shift. Then I'd baste. Low loft batting I wouldn't baste.
