Jelly Roll's

Hello Everyone,

I was watching a video and the Lady was using Jelly Roll's ... didn't say how many rolls you need to make a King size quilt.

Can someone help me? I have never ventured out using precut fabrics, I usually just cut my own fabric. I can figure out the amount of fabric I will need for my sashing and backing. I will be using a Dresden Template.

Thanking everyone in advance for any advice. Hope everyone has a wonderful LABOR DAY weekend and please be safe if you are traveling. Me and mine are staying home this weekend.

Are you talking about a Jelly Roll Race quilt? If so, be aware that they end up with specific dimensions. This PDF might be helpful:

There are other websites with good info. Just Google "king size jelly roll quilt".

If it's not a Jelly Roll Race method you're thinking of, maybe post a link to what you are looking at.

Can you give a link to the video using the Dresden template, also how big you want the quilt to be? Does it use background fabric as well as the jelly roll?

I jelly roll contains 40 strips at 2.5" x WOF, so one jelly roll is about 2.75 yards of fabric. That may help with the calculations, but without knowing the pattern it's hard to give an answer.

Oops, sorry! Didn't see the Dresden reference.

I hadn't watched that video before, and I do like the quilt Jenny made. Such pretty fall colors!

She used only one jelly roll, and that was enough for 9 Dresdens, each of which went on a 22" square. If you figure out how many 22" (unfinished) squares you want for your quilt, that will tell you how many jelly rolls. For instance, if you use 16 squares in a 4x4 configuration and an 8" border, your quilt will measure 102" square, but if you use a 25 squares in a 5x5 configuration with the same border your quilt will be 123.5" square. Or you may want to use a bigger border or make a rectangular quilt or ...

Anyway, for 16 squares you would need only 2 jelly rolls, since one makes 9 squares, and for 25 squares you would need 3 jelly rolls.
