How large should a quilt be for a 5 year old?

Hi, I need to make quilts for a 5 year old and a 3 year old. I don't want to make a bed sized quilt just something that they can cuddle with for a few years. Any recommendations on the size I should make?

for that size i usually do 65-70" x fabric width or sometimes a tad longer and wider if they are taller than usual

ETA: for a 3 yo (i didn't see earlier sorry) i usually do 60xfabric width. so it's not super heavy but they don't outgrow it super quick either

I have twin 3 1/2 year old grandsons and when I made their quilts, I made them 60"x60". I didn't want to make baby quilts because I didn't think they would be able to use them very long. My daughter says they fit on their beds, but they're not too big to drag around.

It should be at least a few years before I have to make bigger ones!

I usually do like the others have said.... but my great niece asked me if I could add on to hers as she got bigger :) So now I wish I would have made it a little bigger (no I did not add on to her quilt, just made her another one)

Go with twin size in fun colors. That's what most go to when they get "big Kid" beds. I am still amazed at how much my 19 year old likes his old quilt.

I made my grand children lay around and play quilts 60 square, they were slightly older than your children that you are referring to.

For my grandchildren (babies) I made 50 inch square. I prefer that size rather than smaller ones as they will be able to use them longer.

If you want it to go on a youth bed it should be about 54x78.

I make WOF so that one piece can be used for the backing. So 42x60 is my usual.
