Rag quilt questions
 

I have read some of the threads on here and it seems that the general consensus is to wash a rag quilt in a laundromat if you have a front-loading washing machine. I just finished my first rag quilt (lap size) and I have a HE top loader machine without an agitator. Can I wash the quilt in that machine or should I still opt for a laundromat?

Not familiar with that machine but to help agitate the quilt you might throw in a pair or two of heavy jeans with it. Hope you have a good lint filter!

I have a top loading machine without an agitator as you do; my rag quilt washed fine in it with no issues.
The lint screen on my dryer however, took a few extra cleanings before it was completely dry.

I have a top loader. I haven't washed the rag quilts in it. I take them to the laundromat. I'm just chicken.......

I take mine to the laundromat not because they won't fit in my washer/dryer but because of the mess.

The lint can clog up the lines in both your washer (front loader or not) and dryer. That would be my reason to take it to the laundromat.

When you wash it, the threads will rise to the top. Open the machine from time to time and scoop the threads out. This will reduce the amount of thread clippings that go through your machine. In the dryer, check the lint trap about every 10 minutes to clear the lint.

I find that if I wash it 2-3 times and then dry it, I get good fluff. Oh, I also shake the quilt outside after washing and before drying. Hope that helps.

I have washed the rag quilts I've made in my Maytag front load machine without any problems.

Its the dryer with the most lint problems. A laundromat would be a great help.

I do the same as Audrey B, I run a colander through the water several times to remove most the threads. It works well.
