Thread cone holder
 

What do you all use as a thread holder for the large longarm thread cones? I have seen metal shelving in quilt shops holding their thread. The shelves are narrow not the normal width of the metal shelving. thank you in advance.

I haven't had my long arm for too long so I don't have a big stash of supplies yet. I keep my long arm stuff in a little 3 shelf metal rolling cart I got at JoAnns.

Are you asking about the thread that is currently in use? If so my machine has an area for the cone to sit on, one on each side of the head. If on the other hand your asking about the extra thread cones I have a shelf under the machine where I store some things.

I have some of the wooden spool holders with pegs but the large cones wouldn't stay on them. Just a few days ago at my guild's meeting the tip of the month was to cut plastic straws and put them over the pegs. Tried it when I got home. Worked great!

I store my thread cones in plastic containers that have a lid. They stack on top of each other, and they are just the right height for the cone. Then I place the containers on the shelf on of the longarm.

Years ago I purchased the wooden cone thread holders. Really sorry that I can't remember just where I purchased each one; however the last one I believe I purchased from"Checkers" quilt shop supply catalog. Each one holds 33 cones of thread, they have a 2 3/4 inch dowel that the cone sits on. I have the holders set on top of bookcases. Here is a picture of them.

I use plastic boxes made for serger thread. We live in a super dry climate and thread gets dusty. On the machine, I use a Deelybob. I have cone stands, but there just isn't enough room on the Sewezi table for all the stuff.

I have my LA thread stored in 3 plastic tubs which I keep under my frame (and use as a footstool when I'm on the drafting stool). To make it easier to organize and be able to see all the cones, I made a "tray" of a shorter plastic tub, set into a deeper tub. That allows me to set the cones upright. I sort by colors (blues/purples/greens/blacks/browns in one; whites/grays/lights in one; yellow/orange/reds/pinks in 3rd). I put multiple cones of the same color into baggies and slip the bobbin inside the cone. This works well while keeping them dust free and not drying out.

My dh made me a large A frame out of peg board, with the longer metal pegs I can hold lots of large spools.

my thread cones are stored in a 3 drawer Iris cart. It isn't pretty, but it works. Eventually, I'd like to buy Alex drawer carts from IKEA.
