One of my grease ports is under a screw?
 

Where one of the grease ports on my motor would be there's a screw head, so I was trying to figure out where the hole was and decided to unscrew the screw, and under it looks like grease. But why is there a screw?

There are some variations to the belt driven Singer motors, some have wicks meant to be greased, some have a felt pad and a tiny hole meant to be oiled. Are you sure it's not a carbon brush under the cover? Dust and grime can be tre treacherous before it's cleaned out. Maybe someone greased the wrong spot in the past.

I thought the carbon brush was under the big black screw

mabye someone got stupid and thought a screw was suppose to be in that hole - and forced one in. Maybe they didn't like that some grease was coming out of it and figured that would be one way to plug it.

With all the years and owners some of these machines may have had, one never knows what they may have experienced.

The hole has threads so at least the screw comes out easily. Under the grease glob was the spring and wick so i guess i have a limited edition dust free grease hole ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Oh, I misinterpreted the pictures a bit, I thought the black bakelite screw was out on the second picture (details are much better on this full size screen). Cathy might be spot on, a lot of odd things happen as the years go by. Im sure what to call it, something between user error, or creativite solutions, probably just and easy way out at some point.

Smokey - hi, I 've found your post re the screw in the grease hole.

I can't quite tell from your photo, I can see that it is BR something but can't quite read it. Would you be able to please read that catalogue BR number for me? I'm just wondering if it is a BRK like mine, in which case maybe someone really did remove that silver grease port on yours. If so, I may try harder to remove mine so I can replace the filthy wicks.
