Webbing -

I have seen nylon, polypropylene, polyester, and cotton webbings available in various widths and weights.

For tote bags - about the size of the oversized reusable grocery type ones - which would you recommend? The tote bags go to a women's center for carrying supplies (items for babies like food, diapers, and clothing)

I have been using the 1-inch light duty polyester webbing from Fasnap. It seems to be working well for this purpose - but I am wondering if any of the others might be better?

For the handles? I use this webbing all the time. I make our dogs leashes, straps for handmade backpack purses, totes. I also cut a 4" piece add a snap and sew it onto the concealed carry belts to hold in the pistol I make them for the family.

Yes, it should work fine. I buy it in 50 yard spools from eBay.

It comes in 10 yard increments and various colors also.

Why bring in something different?

For general tote bags, why not make the handles
from the same or coordinating fabric as the bag???

Same here, I use the fabric I have.

I make the handles for my bags from a cotton twill (if I have it) or the same type of fabric the bag is made from. This does add extra steps and more time so it would depend on what you wanted to do.

Yes, I have used the 1" and really like it. If I want my strap to match my fabric I just cover it with fabric - it's a whole lot easier for me to cover webbing than it is to try and keep a strip of batting from moving around or stretching on me.

Sometimes I don't have enough of the fabric left over to make the straps the way I want to make them -

Sometimes it is just much faster to use the webbing.

I've been using black webbing - it does not seem to show grime as quickly as a light colored cotton fabric.
