Lover's Knot-preferred corner-diagonal or squared off?
I am in the process of putting together the quilt top for a Lovers Knot quilt. The main pattern has directions for making a diagonal corner, but there are also directions for a regular squared off corner. Is there a preference? Is there a practical reason to make the corner one way or the other?
Thanks for your wisdom on this! |
The pattern was written in the 80's when that sort of thing was 'in vogue'. I would put the corners on it. And I believe the quilt is birthed, as well. Nowadays we bind, not birth. You can bring you pattern up to date by adding corners and binding the finished rectangular quilt.
This was one of Eleanor Burns' golden oldies... I have the book around here somewhere too. |
Welcome to the Quilting Board!
I think you are referring to what I call a "cropped corner". A photo of one that I have done is in this thread. https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...s-t122204.html Is this what you are meaning? When a quilt is on the bed, the corner drapes, so that it hangs lower than the sides and end. With a cropped corner, it evens it up more so. That's one advantage of a cropped corner .... another being a unique design option. I don't think of a cropped corner as an 80s thing, as SewBizGirl mentioned. I see it as a personal choice, when it worked for a specific quilt such as the one in this link. |

I made one with regular corners and binding. I bought a booklet with just the lover's knot in several sizes, etc. I think it was updated version. Here is the one I made.

I think it is strictly a design choice.

I love yours, Jingle. Beautiful color scheme.

I made this quilt in yellow and blue fabrics and I squared the corners. I made it king size and it was a monster.

I've done cropped corners on a quilt before, but a different pattern. I agree with Jane Quilter, it is simply a design choice.
