Contact help please
 

I need some current contact information for quilt guilds in Independence MO please. Am getting ready to clean out mother’s sewing room. At 97 she is no longer able to sew and has an abundance of “stuff”. Fabric is top quality quilt shop. Thread etc. We are looking to donate to a guild that has a need for charity projects or any other use they see fit for. I have checked on line but the information available is seldom current. So if anyone here on the board can help it will be most appreciated.

When I was first diagnosed with my vision issues I finally had to admit that I had already placed in the "she with the most fabric wins" rankings and come to terms with that no, I wasn't going to use it all.

I had great success by looking/posting in my local Craig's List (looks like Kansas City, MO might be your closest) with looking under "wanted" and posting under "crafts", there is also a "free" section but like you I wanted it to preferably go to charity organizations so I was willing to wait and see.

First it was all my "non-quilting" stuff, most of that went to textile students at the local arts college. Then I gave a lot of stuff to a local church group. They also accepted the extra orphan blocks to make lap quilts and had a number of places they donated to, both local and international. A local elementary school art teacher was more than happy to take my various craft things, budget cuts have hit the art departments hard. Later stuff went to the girl scouts, some of my non-gutted ties went to a community theater, and more (including books) went to a 4-H fundraiser.

Thank you for looking to give back to the community. While they can be hard to find, people out there will be thrilled to get your mother's treasures.

You should check at local quilt shops. Many quilt guilds don't have websites, but the quilt shop employees could probably tell you about them. Sometimes they are members of a guild without a website. Good luck, that's a big job.

Have you just done a search for guilds? I ask because when I was moving years ago I wanted to know if there were any guilds in the area and I found some that were close and some that were not. Good luck I hope you find what you're looking for!

What a lovely idea! I cleaned out my fabric stash about two months ago, and have nice yardage of wool and silk that I haven't figured out what to do with yet. Donating to the local arts college, which has a fashion program, is just the ticket!

A bunch of guilds in the Kansas City area put together the Kansas City Regional Quilt Festival in June of the odd years. KCRQF.com website lists the guilds with current contact information. Look for participating guilds within the website. It doesn't look like there is a participating guild located in Independence, but some are close.

There is a group in Independence called Calico Cut-Ups. They do not call themselves a guild but a club. I'm thinking it is because they didn't want the hassle that involves. I looked online and saw their annual quilt show advertised with a couple of contact names. When you look up the group there is another one in Arkansas so make sure you get the right one.

you can also go to the website of the Kansas City Regional Quilt Fest (KCRQF) as there are 18 area quilds involved--you can then find the ones close to Independence (there are several) and their contact info is listed. Good luck! And very sorry about your mom.

Don't forget to check out the churches. There are two churches near here who make lots and lots of quilts for charity. They use anything and everything. I gave them a big bag of heavier fabrics that I didn't want. They were very happy with that. They make quilts for vets out of the heavier fabric.
