My quilt is going to Hawaii...
 

...And I’m not. Man, I did not plan that well! Ok, I’m making a lap quilt for my dad, and he lives on the rainy side of Hawaii in Hawaii. I was reasearching batting because I’d like to use something that’s suitable for warm weather, and in my reasearch someone mentioned mildew, and that too!

Should I use bamboo? Does anyone have experience with it? Or would flannel be cool? I also recently petted some quilts made with Hobbs 80/20, and they were lovely - very soft and they felt thin.

Thoughts anyone?

I love Hobbs 80 / 20 batting and especially use it for summer type quilts but also for warm weather climates. The thing is that Warm and Natural breathes because it's cotton, I have never used the bamboo batting so I can't say YAY or nay. Good luck!

I would think wool would be best. It's lightweight and I've never seen mildewy sheep, so..... :thumbup:

One thing to remember, people who live in Hawaii get acclimated. It's not on the 90s every day, it does get cool there as well and most homes have AC.

I just did a quick google search and found 2-3 quilt shops on the island of Hawaii - I would call them and ask :)

This is true! I know some people in Florida who complain and put on long sleeves if the high is only in the 60s.

Some people make quilts without batting to keep them lightweight. If you think mildew is going to be a big problem, then maybe making the quilt out of wool fabric and no batting would be a good idea, as long as you can find some that isn't scratchy. But if your father has (and uses) air conditioning, I wouldn't think it would be a big problem.

Not really an answer for you but I just bought some bamboo and cotton (blend) batting at Fat Quarter Shop. I haven't used it yet though.
You're right- you should be in Hawaii, not the quilt :D lol

I live in Hawaii and I use Hobbs 80/20.

I have never used bamboo, but it sells quickly at the Quilt Shows that I have attended.
