Let's talk about adapters, ok?
 

OK. I've seen adapters that basically lengthen the presser shank from a high shank to a low shank. What I'm wondering is if anyone has ever experimented with doing whatever to make a slant shank use a low shank ankle and feet. Yes, yes, I know just making it longer won't work, because of the alignment difference with the slant.

Has anyone seen a chart that has detailed drawings comparing the foot height and distance between the presserfoot shaft and the needle hole? I can do the measuring, but only if no one else has ever done it before.

Why would I want to do this? Because there are a ton of snap on feet, but there is no snap on ankle for slant shanks. There's only a skinny one that uses the few Singer feet made for some model or other. I don't know slant shanks that well.

If Miessner's Sewing Center had only fixed the transformer on my Necchi, I would never have been lured over to the dark side by you people, and I would never even have begun to think these kinds of thoughts. Ha, ha, ha! Riiiiigggghhht!

SewClassic have this adaptor. I don't know exactly how it works. I guess there are Singer sets for it. I was never that happy with the snap on feet for my Bernina, the original feet are better and they are easy to change, so I never searched much further in that area. However, there are various new slant shank feet available if you aim at a specific purpose. There's quilting feet made, like the Westalee ruler feet. Here's a metal snap on adaptor, on ebay there's at least two different plastic versions. Here's the second type. Most accessories are available for the most common vintage models and brands. If you bother to search a bit, you will find lots of stuff. For some models you need to search a bit more to find alternatives, but even for the early back clamp 66 I have seen an adaptor to general low shank feet.

I noticed I misread the information regarding the metal adapter on ebay. I guess a specific type has to be altered and tweak like the link Sewjourner links to. My machines have come with a box of the basic accessories, and I have only added a couple of feet when needed. They miss the snap-on function though, I can understand it can be an advatage if you switch between feet a lot on some types of work.

I don't know if this will help you themadpatter, but in case other folks are looking for adapters, Creative Feet sells a couple of types of specialty snap on feet that come with 4 adapters including the slant shank to snap on type like Mickey2 mentioned. (The package also includes low shank, high shank and super high shank adapters) The specialty feet are a bit pricey but I found the one on ebay.

Basically I bought the Ribbons and Sequin foot mostly for the adapters and used the slant shank adapter to make a see through quarter inch foot for my Singer 404 and a high shank one for my Kenmore. Note that these are plastic adapters so I don't know how durable they will be if you change the snap on part frequently, but they worked great for creating a "specialty" foot for my slant shank and high shank machines.

Thank you!!!! I have a few of those. I didn't realize that the Creative would work with modern snap-on feet.

I do know that there are more modern Singer machines that have the narrow snap on that would work with the adapter that Sew-Classic has. One model is the 6215.

I decided I wanted a machine for each type of attachment sets I could get - and that is what got me firmly sliding down the slope of machine acquisitions!

As to the issues with converting slant to short, since the needle is also at the angle, I think if you tried to put some sort of adaptor on the slant bar, it may end up being in the way of the needle bar. Put a short shank lined up with the needle hole and cycle the needle to see if there is clearance.

You're welcome, Janey! Like I said, they probably wouldn't stand the stress of regular changing, and you may have to go slow and easy with snapping them on. Try to line up the angle of the adapter opening with the bar on the foot. I've gotten some on by placing the foot on the bed of the machine in the proper spot, and slowly lowering the presser foot bar with the adaper attached - a little alignment adjusting and it will snap in, if you can't get it by hand. BTW, I think there may be a bit of variation in the thickness of the bar part of snap on feet too, so proceed carefully. I've had a couple feet that just wouldn't go on - the bar seemed too thick and I didn't want to break the adapter.

This is genius! I have an elastic foot I got a long time ago- I will have to see if it has these adapters. I'm surprised the invisible zipper feet don't have one of these. I'll check those, too.
