Batting
 

As a complete newbie I am somewhat confused about batting. I decided to start with something simple, Christmas placemats, log cabin design, but have no idea what weight, structure of batting to use or actually when to use it. I am in UK so if someone can give some pointers about what to get and how to proceed I would be very grateful

as long as the batting/wadding isn't thick, it should work well. i also use 80/20 cotton/poly blend and mine stay nice and flat. there is also fusible batting. Have fun!!

I may be the oddball here, but I use Warm and Natural for everything.

I'll join you in the oddball corner :) I get W&N by the bolt when it is 70% off, so it is what I use.

Hi - I’m in the UK and I usually buy my wadding or batting from EBay.

When I first started quilting I used polyester wadding sold by the weight and metre. I went for a 2oz weight and bought a couple of metres. It was cheaper than named brands and as I was just started out I didn’t want to spend a lot on something I might not be able to do. I’ve also tried the 4oz weight but find the increased thickness difficult to work with.

When I got more confident I made a play mat for my grandson - and bought a named brand - Hobbs Poly-Down premium polyester. It was more expensive but much nicer than the cheapest wadding. I have also bought from a local quilting shop. They tend to be expensive but you get to see what you are buying and you can get good advice from the staff.

Connecting Threads has batting on sale. I buy Hobbs 80/20 from there and love it. I love to get a bolt of Warm and Natural when Joann’s puts it on sale.
