Hand Quilting

I'm making a quilt with appliques in the center of 12" blocks. I'd like to hand quilt around the appliques, but I'm not sure what kind of pattern to use. Any ideas? I'd love to try hand stippling, but haven't seen any hand work for this. Thanks!

Could I see a picture or two? I am a very visual person. :)

I am too. Boston and I both love hand quilting.

I am a very slow hand quilter so I now only machine quilt. The fastest hand quilting is a straight line between two points so a stipple line would take a loooooog time. Hand stitching around the appliqué looks nice and then a cross hatch in the background looks good. Look at the batting package for the minimum distance your batt can be quilted and go from there.

Not sure what your applique blocks look like but this is a close up of what I did ............ Most of my quilts are hand quilted (love to hand quilt) and a novice machine quilter ..... well really just learning ..

For applique, I quilt a tight line almost right under the applique and then echo out onto the background with another line about 1/8 to 1/4 inch out. And to make the certain parts of the applique stand out, and not to have puffy areas on the back, I will stitch in the ditch so to speak around key features. Then I use a simple cross hatch to fill in the background.

Unfortunately I no longer can hand quilt but that was my favorite thing to do in the past. I did an applique quilt and crosshatched in the blocks. Turned out quite well, or at least it pleased me lol I have also echo quilted around some patterns . Its your quilt do what pleases you.

Stippling would take a long time and you would be constantly changing directions. What about a clamshell or Baptist fan? Would go a lot quicker for you.

Great top! How about hand quilting in some stars in the background after you quilt around the appliqués? You could also quilt a star in each of the squares in the sashing.
