Quilt top that’s the wrong ratio/ too wide??

This is going to be my first quilt for myself. So far it
Measures 82x84. I was going to add 2 borders. One 1.5 inch finished. And one 6.5 inches finished. That would make it 99.5x 96.75. Its
For my queen sized bed. 60x80 bed. With a 13.5 inch mattress. I used Eleanor Burns’ book for the pattern. But the ratio seems off. Should I cut off some of the width so it finishes more like 90x99? I’m going to use a dust ruffle.

It depends on so many things. Do you want a pillow tuck? Do you have a footboard? How deep is your mattress and box spring? Will be box spring be covered by the dust ruffle? Usually I like quilts to be about square for my queen beds.

Very pretty quilt BTW.

Thank you dunster!! :) My gut is telling me to just leave it be. And if necessary I can have a little more hanging over on the side away from my bedroom door. I don’t have a footboard and I don’t intend to use a pillow talk.

Don't forget, quilting will take up some from the unquilted size.

Do not cut off any of this gorgeous top. You can add borders of different sizes to get what you want, and they do not have to match in size. Your quilt, your rules.

I've not made any bed size quilts, so I am speaking hypothetically. Rounding off the numbers, you should have about a 20" drop at the bottom and about an 18" drop on each side. Of course, batting shrinkage will take some after it's washed. Someone above says you'll get some shrinkage just from the quilting.

I found this, which I will bookmark (It seems pretty comprehensive):

edit: Maybe you made the same mistake I did when I started calculating. I didn't stop to think there is only one drop on the length and two drops on the width.

Pretty top and I would just add your borders and quilt it!

Have you tried it on your bed to see how it looks?

It will be a bit smaller after it is quilted! I failed to keep that in mind once.
