Question About Cataract Surgery
 

Really, I have a question for those of you who may have had cataract surgery with corrective lens implants. I am always one to say that you should ask your doctor any medical questions but this time I would like to know if anyone has had experience with some of the new corrective lens, for example, Simphony. I would like to know what has worked well for you quilters. Some can now give you improved distance, middle distance, and close vision, still needing glasses for tiny print. I know that most people are very happy with their results, as is my DH without the middle distance or close vision, just uses glasses. Thoughts anyone?

I’ve had both eyes done over a period of about 16 months and I’m so happy - I see better than when I was born - with crossed eyes, etc. Unfortunately I wish I could have had the type of lenses you talk about but they won’t work for me. I’ve heard about people who do not need glasses after surgery and was hoping perhaps I could go back to single vision lenses, but I’m still in bifocals. But I see so much better. So I’m hoping someone in this list can give you more info, all I can say is get them done with the best surgeon available. I’m lucky to have such a surgeon here in Mooresville, NC. Only your surgeon will be able to answer your questions truthfully - for you- if you are a good candidate for this type of lenses.

My friend had to have her lens lasered not long after it was implanted because it got cloudy. She was told that happens sometimes. It was news to both of us.

I've heard the cloudyness is not uncommon also. I've had the surgery on both eyes and while I don't have to wear glasses for distance or driving I still do because I can see better. My eye doctor told me going into the surgery that I will still be able to see better with glasses.

I had a stigmaisn (sp?) in/on both eyes. My left eye is for distance and my right eye is for close up. I have two special lenses to correct the stigmaisn (sp?). My eye surgeon told me my brain might not tolerate the two different lenses. I wore a flexible (not the correct word & I too tired to remember the correct word) lens for a couple of weeks on my right eye. Did not have knausia as some might. Have had my cataracts removed for over 5 years and love them. Sorry about my spelling. Any questions, please PM me.

They are telling me mine are both clouding up. It's probably payback for me throwing up on the doctor when he did it. I'm a bad gagger and I had eaten too close to the deadline.

As I understand it, there is a part of the eye that is left to help support the new lens and that can become cloudy with time. It is a fairly easy office procedure to use a laser to open that. The "negative" that I experienced was while I was waiting to have the second eye done. After having the first one done, I noticed color variations. I had chosen a fabric for borders that was not good at all once I saw what I had after the second surgery. Example--the royal blue of the Dallas Cowboys was more a periwinkle blue! When I went back to the shop and explained my situation to the gal there she said I was lucky it was only the borders. Her grandmother had made an entire quilt top thinking she had red and it was pink (or vice versa). Had to take it all apart and remake it!

The issues with color cleared up with having the second eye done.

My brother, sister and I all had the same procedure and got good results. I don't know the name of mine but I've had no problems with cloudiness or anything. I just need glasses not for small print and close work. I buy them at the drugstore.
I should add that none of us wore glasses before having it done- just readers as we turned about 45.

Yes, I know of several folks whose lenses became cloudy after surgery. It happens, but, hopefully, it is fixable.
