Spray basting - can hair spray be used?
 

I don't use spray to baste quilts, but a friend of mine does. She is tired of paying the $15 Cdn per can that it costs here, and was wondering if she could use hair spray or would it gum up her machine. I honestly didn't know, and hadn't seen any discussion on that, so she decided to try a sample swatch. I did suggest she research using Elmer's school glue as an alternative.

So, any thoughts on the topic?

never thought of hair spray... but I do use the heck out of elmers glue :)

I watched a tutorial by slightly off quilter and I think she used spray starch for smaller pieces. I use Elmer’s washable school glue straight out of the bottle drizzled in a grid. When it is dry it does not gum up needle and it washes out. I’m about 20 quilts in.

Not something that I am even intrigued to want to try!

Last summer during the July Shop Hop, I thought the price seemed too good to be true.
Either that or my brain was forgetting the regular pricing for Best Press, 505 and Retayne.
I didn't buy.

Then came home and did a phone survey.
Sure enough, my brain had been firing on all cylinders that day
..... my jaw kind of dropped with the wide range.
Yes, the price was too good to be true ... but it was for real!!!!

So yes, check around and you may be pleasantly surprised at what you can find
right here in Ontari-ar--ari-ooooooo! :)

I hadn't even thought that Len's might have what I wanted/needed, but being that I was going right by and that the LQS was totally out of my way, I let my fingers do the dialing
..... and guess what??

Never heard of or ever thought of spray basting with hair spray. This thread started out with a comment about the cost of spray baste. I have been spray basting for about 7 or 8 years and won't go back. But I have discovered that I don't need to spray as heavy as one would think to get the same "sticking power" I get at least four lap/twin quilts from a can of "Spray-n-Bond" that I get at JoAnn's when it is on sale. So my cost is then about $1.50 or less per quilt.

I have some cans of "The Original Quilt Basting Spray" made by Sullivans that works well but it was donated to me so I don't know the cost. Because of the odor I only use in when I can have the windows open.

Best advise: Watch for sales, coupons and then buy two.

Agreed, nothing else for me!! No shifting, no wiggling. I hand quilt, hoopless. I love Elmers!!

I remember taking pen marks out of a white labcoat with the old Aqua Net hairspray. It was sticky but also smelly.
