sewing room furniture
 

My winter project is going to be getting my sewing room furniture done. I have lots of different types of storage - a mish mash of stuff, and I want to buy a storage cabinet of some kind. I've been googling sewing / craft storage cabinets but am not having much luck looking for something big!!!

Can anyone recommend a store? Keeping in mind I'm in Canada, so they need to at least ship there!

Do you have an Ikea near you? There are some great Ikea hacks for cutting/storage cabinets, but the cost of shipping the parts (most are based of Kallax units) can be prohibitive (unless you're ordering a lot of stuff).

I can walk to the Ikea LOL ... I don't want hacks LOL I am trying to find something that is specifically for sewing .. something that someone else has already thought out!!!!

oh dear.....I am offering a hack! But it is a brilliant one....at least I think so....I bought a lawyers bookcase...you know...one with the extra deep shelves and glass doors that flip down. I love it and I would think it better serves my use than stuffed with large oversized books.....I take my yardage leave it folded like it comes of the bolt and wrap anything between 1-2 yards around a 24 x 6 inch ruler and then fold it in half, I take anything between 2 and 3-4 yards and wrap it around my 8.5 x 24 inch ruler and fold it in half. Then I stack them on the shelves with the short folds out....I can tell at a glance what is in my stash and the approximate size of it. On the bottom shelve I do have some larger cuts of fabric stacked for backings and two cloth boxes for my wool. The glass doors cover the fabric to keep dust out and I have the bookcases against the south interior wall so the sun never shines on it....yeah....I love this hack....one of the best things I bought. It is sturdy and was half price. The movers had a challenge fiting it through the door of my small bedroom turned sewing room....

Some of those hacks actually are quite well thought out. DH and I made this one for my sewing room.

to anyone else ... if you have a pick of a "hack" ... please post! I just don't want to spend days trying to get "something" to work. I would rather pay money for something that I can put together (or give to my dad to put together lol)

Do you have container store there? I use the wire basket system for storing threads, notions, charm/fat quarters. I like this system as it is flexible (height, width and baskets) depending on storage needs. Look in the office supply stores for storage solutions. Lateral file cabinets will hold lots of different items.

Do you have a plan of the space? Is there a closet in your sewing room? Is the storage efficient and organized?

You can just use bookcases/cabinets as desired. It doesn't have to be a hack from ikea.

Just took a look at his site and noticed that Ateliers Quilt & Coton in Gatineau reps for him. I'm sure they must have at least one piece in the shop, so that you can get a sense of the quality.

Not sure if you have any big quilt shows in your area, but he does take his show on the road quite a bit, all across the country. So that would be another possibility to check things out IRL.

I bought one of his sewing desks a few years back. Started with the basics and did a few customizations for me.

Ikea has a lot of nice pieces and storage made for a craft room. You should go and look.
