Phaff Passport 2 update

Well after my machine being in the shop for over 2 months, they are saying that they can't get the parts to fix it. Phaff is still selling this machine and mine is only 5 years old. I only use this machine to take to sewing classes and retreats. I called the company direct and was told that they only have to carry parts that are under warranty. Mine was out of warranty because it had a limited 10 year warranty. Needless to say the warranty didn't really cover much. I had talked 2 of my friends into buying a passport 3 and now I regret that because I will feel really bad if something goes wrong with theirs and they can't get parts. So I would suggest that you don't purchase a Phaff passport 2.

I have three friends who got the Passport 2 and they all had issues and problems getting them fixed. I think they are happy now, but, what they were all going through was a misery to them. Seems like Pfaff would want better customer service.

I am using my passport 2 as a dust collector.....I haven't decided what to do with it....we had a garage sale...but I didn't feel right about selling even for $25 as it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't ......bummer....I just got it gone so I may just haul it to the recylcing place....

I love my Passport 2 and have had it for probably 5 years. I did have to have something replaced on it but that was my fault--it fell over in the car and messed up the board that selected stitch width, length, etc. It was easily repaired and works great. I use it as my travel/weekly quilt guild machine.

I hope it lasts for you.

I recently posted about this problem, not specifically to this brand of machine, but it's a problem across the board. I was recently interested in getting a new machine, and I learned from our local sewing machine mechanic that most sewing machine manufacturers only stock parts which are warranteed parts. Thus, you can have a machine which becomes unfixable even though it is still under warranty because the part it needs for repair is a "wear and tear" part, not one that is under warranty. It's a horrible practice, but this is where we are now. He also told me Bernina is the only manufacturer which still makes their own parts, so I have a better chance on finding a needed part with a Bernina machine than others, which is why the machine I bought is a Bernina. This is a first for me, I have never owned a Bernina before, and I loved my previous machines: Kenmore, Pfaff, and Babylock. I still have a Pfaff Tiptronic which I use as a backup/ travel/ second machine.

Do you know exactly what was wrong with yours? Does it sew at all? Mine tries to take off sewing but stutters (stitches really slow) and then it will sew normally. I don't know exactly what the part is that I need. Maybe you have the part in your machine that I need.

This is exactly why I do not invest in an expensive machine! On my Juki, that is less than 10 years old I cannot get a new bobbin case! Now that is ridiculous. I will purchase vintage machine and get them going or I have purchased inexpensive Brothers Embroidery machines. I don't feel bad when a work horse like these little Brothers wear out in about 8-10 years. I can buy 25 machines made by Brothers (embroidery machines) for the cost of a single High end machine at $9000. That would give me about 250 years of sewing without a problem.

This almost sounds like something as simple as a bad foot pedal. Have you tried swapping out the foot pedal (if you have access to one).

My Pfaff 7550 (20 years old) has done that at times from the time I bought it new. I always thought it was something I was doing, but it's a glitch in the foot pedal that I should have gotten fixed under warranty many moons ago. Now it's just part of my machine's personality, because it's not really all that bad in my case ;-).

But I can understand that yours could be worse. Just thought I'd put the foot pedal idea out in case it's something you could try.

You can't get a new bobbin Case? Not hook but Case? Ouch, that's appalling. I would look at 3rd party options, Ebay, Craig's List on that. I use nothing but 3rd party sewing feet on my Pfaff. They work very well. Maybe someone makes a third party bobbin case.

Good idea about buying vintage machines. And I agree. I used to buy top of the line and now I buy middle of the line and lower because electronics seem to be built to fail.
