How to identify a quilt?
1 Attachment(s)
I got this very nice old quilt, but how can i identify things like the age of the fabric or pattern? Is it based on the colors or the fabric print? Any help would be appreciated!

The material looks like some we used in the 50-60"s. I have some quilt tops my MIL made in that time..she hand appliqued dresden plate blocks..(I hope to get them quilted)..Have finished several quilts she started from that time.. with similar fabrics..looks like a cathedral window technique was used to make the center star :) .

I'm guessing that was made no later than the 1970's and no earlier than the 1930s. I'd have to look at some other things -- are all the blocks the same or are there different fabrics? I'm basing that mostly on the fabric used and the style of project. I don't do applique myself and don't know the name offhand, but I'm pretty sure it was a mass produced one, like included with Mountain Mist batts or in the Newspaper patterns.
In dating a quilt, it is only as old as the most recent fabric, but that doesn't matter to most people really "only" the preservationists and historians. I often see true scrap bag quilts made from multiple decades of saved bits and pieces. |
A local shop is teaching how to make this block soon... I think they called it a Missouri Daisy.

From looking at the fabric I would strongly guess the 1960's. It looks like prints of the time. No matter is is a quilt that is stealing your heart.

Thank you. I uploaded a couple more photos. I wasnt sure if certain patterns or colors were popular or sold during certain years. I finished repairing it and was thinking about quilting it some more. Not sure yet. I just started to get into quilting myself. Thank you for the info about the pattern!

I love it, lucky you for having this beauty.

Lovely quilt!

It is really pretty and it is difficult to make. I tried making it and will eventually finish but those set in pieces are hard. Ithe pattern was in a newspaper in the 1930’s.
