Baby quilt size question
 

I was thinking of making a small baby quilt out of 1 charm pack, but the finished size of the top would only be 27*31.5 inches. I am going to use either no batting and use minky or fleece for the back, or else use batting and back with flannel so that it is nice and snuggly.

I am now questioning if these will just be way too small. It's almost more of a lovey size at that point. I did also order some white charm squares so I could add to my pack and do more of a disappearing 9 patch pattern and make them bigger.

So, what is a good size to give as a gift to someone? I want it to be used and well loved by the recipient, so I want it to be practical.

I usually like to go bigger so it can be used longer.

Why not add a contrasting border?

5.5 inches added to each side will increase the width and length by 10 inches. If you have yardage of a fabric you will be able to get each border strip from the width of the fabric.

Maybe you could put sashing between your blocks in addition to added border(s) to increase the size. We would love to see a finished picture when it's all done just because we love to drool over finished quilts. :D

I think 36" square is the smallest useful size. Crib size is around 42 x 54. Borders on a charm pack size is the easiest way to increase size.

I will have to run to JoAnn and see what I can find that might coordinate. Next time, I will plan better.

I always make more crib size--that way they can use once they are old enough to have a quilt in bed with them.

I make quilts for foster kids 43" x 58". I buy the crib size batting 45" x 60".

I never make quilts smaller. The above size can be used a lot longer.

I don't make anything smaller then 45x45".
