Worth it?
There is a used Bernina 930 Record for sale on CL for $600. Photos are good, machine looks great, well taken care of. Includes everything! Original manuals, hard case, numerous feet in original case, walking foot, numerous bobbins, tools, attachable table, knee lifter, foot pedal, etc.
ive heard so much about these machines and wonder if it’s worth the price (assuming it is in good condition manually). According to the seller, it belonged to her mother who has passed away recently. She said her mom loved the machine, sewed garments on it for years and took meticulous care of it. Just wondering... |
How old is this Machine?

I bought mine new in 1983 & it's still going. When I bought mine it came with a free table. It's the last all metal machine Bernina made. It's a workhorse. Many consider it a semi-industrial, as it will sew thru 3 layers of stiff leather. I used mine so much that I wore the teeth off the feed dogs. That was the only part I ever had replaced. If this machine was well taken care of I'd say yes it's worth the asking price.

I'd buy any Bernina for that price!! They are fabulous machines.

It sounds like it was well cared for. Berninas have a lifetime warranty for a reason. I've had the same 830 for 40 years, and it has metal gears. It has been in the shop a few times for oiling and cleaning, but no other issues.

I have a Bernina 930, and it is an awesome machine! It's weakness is the basting devise. If it isn't used regularly, it will freeze up. Then your needle bar won't go up and down. One other thing is the feed dogs, If they are cut like teeth, then you have the feed dog upgrade, which is good. If the feed dogs are cut like xxxx, you can't us a walking foot. It just doesn't grab enough to pull fabric through. It has the "needle up" feature, which can go wonky, but is pretty easy to fix.
It does better than my newer Bernina, on heavy fabrics. And it never skips stitches. You might be able to talk the price down $50. |
I love my Bernina and my Bernina shop owner who cleans mine every year. He says his problem with the machine is they last forever!

This sounds like a dream machine with it being all metal. The price is right if all the moving parts work.

I had my mothers, It froze up, and when I took it in for service, the service man, said no fixing. The inside parts were bent. Don't think I would get another. The bad part for me, was I had to buy this machine. Should have put my $'s on a new machine,

I would consider that to be a very good price.
Mine do not have the needle threader thing - which is the only "complaint" I have about them. I also do not consider them to be easily portable because of their weight and getting them in and out of the carrying cases is kind of a hassle. But - they sew sooo quietly and I love the serpentine stitch on them. If you can, try it before you buy it. It is - basically - a mechanical machine. Sa |
