Borders
Is there a formula for calculating the width of quilt borders?
|
I usually try to coordinate my border sizes with the size of the pieces in the top. I also go with what I would need for the quilt finished size I want. So if there is a formula, I don’t know it😂

Not that I know of. It's very subjective and you just have to play around with widths until you're satisfied. Your eye will tell you.

Thanks!
Thank you. Your answers confirm what I was thinking. I need to ‘audition’ widths and do what looks the best.

Not that I know of but one thing I do know it is better to much than not enough! I have found myself in that spot a couple of times where I thought I had enough. I even laid it out but then discovered I did not have enough.

I usually use 3" (cut 3.5)border. Sometimes 4" or 5". Anything bigger, not pleasing to my eye or brain. What I was once told by a quilting teacher, "the size of your block determines the size of your border" For instance, if your finished block measures 8" your border should be 4". I think what is pleasing to your eye is a better measure.

A little bit of math and use some of the numbers when doing border.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjSHVDfXHQ4 I like a 2, 4, 6 border or 3,5 inch border. |
