Help please with thread
What type thread do you all think is best for sewing blocks together. And which one is good for machine quilting. I under stand that I need to use a low lint one.
|
I have been using Glide, which is a polyester thread, for piecing and for longarm work. The thread works great in both my vintage Singer 201 and my Juki J-350QVP and produces VERY little lint.

I like Aurifil for piecing as it is strong but thin. When I first started quilting I used Coats and Clark or Gutterman 50 weight thread for piecing. Most machines are not that fussy about thread for piecing. Find what your machine likes and use that. For quilting, it depends on what your machine likes, the batting you are using and if you are using a walking foot (straight lines) or free motion quilting. Try a good quality machine quilting thread and see what your machine likes. The Superior Thread has a lot of good information on their site about thread.

I also am a fan of Aurifil 50 wt for piecing but I also have some Gutterman that I continue to use up. For FMQ both on my domestic and LA machines, I use Glide, Isacord and Superior.

I have been using Bottom Line from Superior for piecing, both in the bobbin and as a top thread. I like that it's lint free and doesn't take up as much room in the seam. For quilting (on the longarm) I primarily use a trilobal poly thread, but also use Bottom Line, Micro Quilter for SITD, or occasionally something else, depending on what thickness I want.
|
I use Connecting Threads Essentials for piecing, it's a little linty, but I just clean out the bobbin area after 4 bobbins, for fmq, I use Metro machine embroidery threads, you can't beat their price, customer service and they have lots of colors.

I use Gutermann 100% cotton, 50 wt for piecing. I buy it on the giant cones or big spools, so the price is better. Metler's Silk-finish is a very nice, 100% cotton thread that's less linty, but it costs more, so I stick with the Gutermann. My favorite for machine quilting is Superior's So Fine, polyester 50 wt.

I love Glide. I use the same thread for both piecing and quilting when every possible. It is a nice low lint thread that is so strong it works well for both.
|
I find the sheer variations of threads so daunting! I've been using Aurifil and Connecting Threads but wanted to branch out so I bought several spools of a lot of different ones. Well, I'm still a bit confused haha.
I like So Fine or Bottom Line (not sure which) which is currently in my Bernina. I've been piecing and quilting with it. Low lint and seems to last forever. If you check this board there have been several very good topics on threads. There are many good ones out there. |
My favorite piecing thread is Masterpiece. I also use Gutermann and Presencia 60 wt. I found the Presencia 50 wt. to be too thick for piecing.
