triangle squares
 

Help please. My friend took 4 fat quarters and made a giant 4 patch. It measures about 39 inches across and 35 inches down she said. Now she wants to make it like a square in a square. I am not good with this nor can I do the math for it. Can someone help me help her please. Thanks

I would trim all 4 sections into the same size, so that you would have a 35" square. Remember that you will have your seam allowance so your finished size will be 1/2" smaller than cut. Rectangles don't work quite the same way as squares and right angles.

Edit if in time -- for the most stable cut for the corner/setting triangles you would want to start with a square and cut down the diagonal, That will give you the straight grain on the outer edges.

Hey -- I found out later that calculator doesn't go up as big as your center.

At 35" (which may not be your correct final size) the diagonal measures 49.5 -- that would mean the corner triangles would be roughly 25" per side. To determine the size of a HST, we add 7/8th's seam allowance. For people like me, we round up that to a full inch (or more) bigger than our measurement.

Me, I'd cut squares about 26.5-27" and divide those in half. Sew on and trim to your finished square size.

Don't know if the diagram just makes it worse... but I'm trying to help :)
