Quilt for an active teen

Hi, y’all! I’d like to make a graduation quilt for our step-granddaughter. I doubt she’ll take good care of it, based on the state of her bedroom! Any ideas for fabric choices that will wash up well and take some abuse?? I was thinking flannel.

How about a t-shirt quilt? They always seem popular with teens.

I doubt she’d let me cut up her T-shirts!! I’ve made them in the past, and they are a lot of work. Will they stand up to washings and abuse?

I would ask her to browse some quilt photos (ie on Pinterest) and choose one she likes, and give you one colour or fabric bundle she likes that you can work from. That way you will not have to second-guess her taste, which in colours and designs can be extremely personal!

Yes, great idea! I’m concerned about putting a lot of money into something she might not cherish the way I cherish my grandma’s quilts. She can be rather careless.

If she's not the type to really take care of things, I'd just make an easy pattern. If you think it won't survive and be cared for don't put a lot of work into it. Maybe later when she's more mature and has more appreciation of things, you can make her another.

Yes, I’ll probably look for a cute panel, add some borders, and hope for the best! Like you said, when she’s older she may appreciate a fancier quilt. Thanks for your suggestions!

I think a panel is a great idea for this situation. Sounds like you have it handled!

Granddaughter definitely needs to pick out the fabric. You can probably choose the pattern.
I watched a Grandma buying fabric for a Granddaughter and I’m sorry to say, fabric was not looking like something a younger person would like, so waste of money & effort.

rag quilts would take a lot and are easy to do.
