Entwined Boarder
 

Hi, I am hoping someone can help me. I am trying to add a entwined boarder on a panel. The panel measures 42 inches square. I am using this as my guide https://www.quilterscache.com/E/EntwinedBorder.html .
I think I should make my squares should be 4 inches and 4 7/8 for the half square triangles. Can someone check my math and make sure I am figuring it out correctly?

I don't think it will fit perfectly with the 42" panel (as 42 is not evenly divisible by 4). If you want to make the proportions the same as the picture you showed, then the panel needs to be 48". can you add a 6" inner border to get it the right size?

when I do HSTs, I round up. I would cut 5" squares, make the HSTs, then trim down to the right size.

Your math is right. 4 inch squares would finish at 3.5 which divides evenly into 42. That’s a lovely border idea. Thanks for sharing!

oh. okay. listen to people who actually know math! lol. I forgot seam allowances. sorry!

Just to be clear on the math. The finished size of each unit is 3.5 and the finished length of the border is 42 (12 units at 3.5 each).

The unfinished unit ( with seam allowances) is 4. A half square triangle should be cut at least 4 3/8 (3.5 plus 7/8).

Edited to add: in my earlier post, I assumed that the panel actually measures 42.5 inches, allowing for 2 1/4 seam allowances. If the finished size of the panel is actually 43.5 inches, then you will almost certainly want to add a skinny border to the panel to make the math easier. To determine the finished size of the blocks for the length of the pieced border, divide the finished size by 12.
