1970(ish) Atlas Sewing Machine
I am trying to find (at least a picture of) the machine that my mom had at our house that I also used to help her make her handmade dolls. This would have been about 1975-76. It was an Atlas. It had select stitch. This machine could even do simple embroidery. The different stitches were illustrated on the arm of the machine and may have had a push button for each one (my memory is vague on that aspect). It didn't have a vintage 60's look to it at all from what I see of the only pictures I can find online. I'm certain it was an Atlas I was 12-13 yrs old at the time and running off patterns 20 at a time for her to invert and stuff. It's seems wacky to me that I can't generate a search that will produce an image (and very fond memory) of that model. Can someone help me better identify and help me find this, apparently, elusive model???

Welcome to Quilting Board.
I wonder if it was a Select-o-matic as seen in this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLCn203rQt0 According to the manual found at https://archive.org/details/select-o...ge/18/mode/2up it has some built in decorative stitches. There is another pink Atlas that is a little different from the above one, but not much info about the machine itself at https://www.quiltingboard.com/vintag...y-t247669.html There were a couple of Atlas machines that have decorative stitches, but are on Pinterest. Both are from ebay, so no longer able to be found on ebay. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/vtg-se...9627751461691/ and https://www.pinterest.com/pin/vintag...8258071141813/ Good luck on your search. Just found this one, but does not have decorative stitches and the push buttons lower or raise the feed dogs. https://www.ebay.com/itm/26519306462...Bk9SR5DFntyBYg

I'm going to guess it's a Japanese Zig Zag machine. You might find a clue in the 50-odd pages of this thread, dedicated to those beasts:

It's my understanding that Brother produced many Atlas machines post-WWII for marketing in the U.S. Maybe you'd have better luck finding a match by searching for photos of Brother models from the 1960/70s?
For instance, would this be closer to what you remember? (Brother ZU2-B687 Pacesetter: Source Link) https://pungolivinghome.files.wordpr...04/dsc0636.jpg Edited to add: I found a Reddit thread that might be helpful: https://www.reddit.com/r/sewing/comments/je69ez/anyone_have_info_on_this_machine/ https://preview.redd.it/t0iw94tl73u5...abled&edf877eb |
Whoops, meant to add a photo of the machine from the linked Reddit thread. By the time I realized it, I couldn't edit my comment anymore.
https://github.com/krsholcomb/sewing...1.jpg?raw=true If this is a closer match to what you remember, it's likely that AlZilla was correct in suggesting it's a Japanese ZigZag machine. From the reddit comments on that thread: It's a generic Japanese zigzag (relatively new; probably from the 70s or 80s). Atlas is not a manufacturer; it's a badge name. ... machines sold under this badge were made by Brother. This model is almost identical to the Brother XL703. |
