How many jeans

I want to make a jeans quilt (about size 50x60).. a Any ideas how many pairs of jeans I will need.

It depends on the size of the jeans. I generally plan on 20 pair for a twin size, so you'd probably need about 10 pair.

..... and the cut of the jean (skinny tight? bulky and flared?)

And too, as to what size of pieces you need for the pattern you are using.

Best thing to do would be to measure (or cut) a pair to get a sense of what you are getting from that one pair. And then guesstimate from there.

You could always go out and EGADS, buy bluejean fabric as it comes in a variety of colors. That what I did years ago and never again. Bluejean quilts are very heavy to say the least. I've made 2 in my lifetime and was about to make another one, even had it all cut out too and decided to give it away to someone that makes bluejean quilts for charity. Don't know if I still have the bluejean fabrics or not though.

I got all the denim fabric for my blue jean quilt as pre-cut squares at a local Mennonite Charity Shop. They cut up all the jeans they can't sell and bag them. I got enough 6 1/2" squares to do a 70 x 88 quilt for $25.00.
If you have any such thrift shops in your area, it may be worth a look!

Men's jeans are the best. Wide and long legs.

Send a note to your family, friends, and neighbors asking for their old/grown out jeans! I did that and someone left me a huge duffel bag of men's jeans.

Ha, once you get the word out you are looking for old jeans, they will come....in abundance..and your brown paper grocery bags will overflow! They will keep comeing for years. Yep, I now have moved my old jean fabric into boxes...in the attic....for someday. Oh, they make wonderful dog blankets!
