That is the way I learned to make those. I like to starch fabric very stiff and then cut the square sizes I need. If using the mini charms I only finger press and put a book weight on the finished units. This keeps the edges flat until I need to sew them in a block.

Thanks for the link, EP. I am going to copy and paste the link to the 2.5 Birthday Swap Thread here on the QB. Perhaps some of us can use that technique, with starch, without starch to put some of our 2.5s to work in a quilt. Sis'tas helping sis'tas. ;)

I also saw and tried it earlier with some 4.5 squares I miscut on another project. 4.5 came out to a 5.5 qst. so...does anyone have a table "come out with this size qst"?

I have used this method with very small QSTs and found it worked well - I think the bias edges would become more of an issue the larger the pieces you work with...

I tried this today with 5" sqs, worked out beautifully, the centre join was spot on, but the bias outside edges bothered me as how the blocks would behave in a quilt. I then took some yardage and lined up the 45 deg line on the ruler with the lengthwise grain and cut sqs, then sewed as before. This worked well to and I got 2 sides with lw grain and 2 with width wise grain. Would use more fabric but be more stable IMHO.
