How do you use your pinking shears?
 

Since reading the pinking shears post, I started thinking about those clunky shears of mine. Fiskars are clumsy to use, so I am looking at replacing them.
However, I am wondering how you use yours? Mostly, I cut strips of fabric to create "ribbon" for a wrapped gift.

I just invested in a new pair to make the edges pretty on the random act of kindness hearts I tuck around the country as we travel. I was looking for scallops rather than zigs, on the recommendation of a fellow hearter I purchased a set of two off amazon. many good reviews, the bad ones all refered to stiffness. I could barely get them to move. Made in China, 2 pairs for under $15.00, shipped them back the next day.
WhatI ended up with are from a real tool company, Tooltron Scallop Fabric Shears, Japanese made. PLastic handles so not quite as heavy as some. They have since gone up in price but I paid that much for some Karen Buckley scissors, and Ginghers so it makes sense to get quality you have to pay for it.

when shopping keep in mind there are different MM of zigs/scallops, go for bigger if you want them to show. the tooltroons are big. For your use the rotary cutter would work fine, you are welcome to mine although it probably needs a new blade I've used it on card stock back when making cards.

Ha... didn't answer your question :) I use my accuquilt to cut hearts from my pieced scraps, then back with thin batt and backing scraps. I use my scallop scissors to but around the top heart leaving a pretty frame. which is why I wanted the larger MM size.

I use them for clipping curves. I wish there could be mini pinking scissors for small pieces. I also use them for raw edge applique and sewing.

I don't have the scissors anymore, but do have pinking blades for the rotary cutter. Rarely used, in all honesty.

Those are really nice, KalamaQuilts. They are sure to brighten someone's day.

I have an older pair of Fiskars. I use them for cutting down batting and backing once I have sandwiched a quilt. No particular reason, they just cut better than straight scissors. Granted they are an older pair which were made better than today's pairs. My oldest pair of straight Fiskars are at least 40 years old and still cut the best too.

I use my pinking shears when I come across a fabric that unravels and becomes quite stringy. What a pain to deal with on the backs of quilt tops. So I take a few minutes and just barely trim the edge of the seam allowance with the pink. Stops the thread mess in its tracks.

KalamaQuilts....thank you for your response to this question. I'm also wanting to make hearts as acts of kindness and wanted a good pair of pinkers for that. Your hears are wonderful...never would have thought about the decorative stitching around the edges. What a wonderful idea! I'm going to look up the scissors you recommended.

thank you. It only takes about 1 or 2 minutes to do that round of pretty stitches, they come on even the basic machines now. I use ombre/multicolored quilt thread so it shows up because it's a little thicker.

I have been scratching around my shelves for bits of lace, like the ricrac but I think it's all gone. and I do Love those scallop scissors.
OnebyOne, you should check the small mm ziggers, like 3mm, I think they'd have that finne pinking you are looking for. My scallopers are 7MM
