Mixing flannel and non-flannel?
If I preshrink my fabrics, can I mix flannel and non-flannel regular quilting weight fabric in a quilt? I'd like to make a baby quilt with regular cotton quilting fabric and make the backing from flannel. I'm wondering if these two fabrics would shrink at the same rate as the quilt is repeatedly laundered. Given that I've preshrunk both fabrics, I would think so. What do you think?

Hi Synnove, I've done baby quilts like this (regular cotton tops and flannel backs) and just prewashed all fabrics and they've turned out fine. Good luck!

I second the post by Pamelor. I’ve had no issues combining the two fabrics if pre washed.

It's commonly done ... so, why not go for it?
Just be sure that all have been full shrunk before you start your project. Remind yourself that flannels often need more than one wash in hot water, to get the full shrinkage. |
Just make sure you preshrink the flannel at least twice. It has residual shrinkage, so you want to be sure.
