QR Code Happiness

I recently loss my soul dog. Apparently the way I process intense grief is by decluttering & organizing. After tackling a few closets I eventually made it to my sewing room. It took me 2 full weeks but my sewing room is now a marvel of organization (IMO).I thought I'd share what I did in the hopes it could inspire someone.

1) I purchased a Brother P-Touch label cube label maker (LOVE IT).
2) I downloaded a free app called "Smart Inventory". (LOVE IT) It generates QR codes, allows you to inventory stuff, etc. There are a few annoying things about the free version but it ultimately does everything I needed/wanted.
3) I went through every bin, pile, basket, etc in my sewing room. No corner overlooked. I looked at everything and made a conscious decision on whether it was something worth taking up space in my sewing room or not. If not, it went in a donation box that was eventually donated to a group of quilters where I work. Anything they don't want will be brought to a quilt guild to hopefully find a new home.
3) Everything that I decided to keep was logged in the Smart Inventory app and associated with a bin. I generated a QR code for every bin using the Smart Inventory app. I printed a label with QR code for every bin using my label maker and stuck the label to the bin. In the Smart Inventory app I was able to create a custom field to indicate where the bin is actually located.

If I want to find something, I can search in the Smart Inventory app. It tells me the bin it is in and where the bin is located. Alternatively I can scan the QR code from a bin's label using the app and the app will tell me exactly what's in the bin.

I'm the type that this sort of detail and organizing would be like having a job. I can't keep a journal updated much less a spreadsheet or app update of my quilting projects. I often think I need a video camera going full time in my sewing room so I can go back and watch myself lose things.

Imanna, sorry for the loss of your fur baby soul dog. They sure do give us lots of love, and leave us grieving when they pass.
What you did for organizing in your quilt room is incredible. QR codes are everywhere, and what a smart way to use them for organizing. Technology is a great thing.

Imanna, I offer my condolences on the loss of your soul dog. I hope you find comfort in knowning that your counterpart had a wonderful life with you.

Organizing your sewing room with QR codes is a great way to get set up and keep you moving forward. As you are still grieving, this QR code system will help you track things down into the future as your memory for where you stored things may not be at its peak right now. Great idea! Thank you for sharing.

I've had my Brother label maker for years and use it everywhere. When my sister bought her last house, there were so many light switches in the kitchen it would be hard to remember what turned which light on so I made small labels to help her. I also just picked up some DVD movies for my brother who's in a nursing home so I made labels with his name on them so he could keep track which were his and which were the nursing home's. So many things you can use the label maker for. I also have my rotary cutters marked for either "paper" or "fabric" so no one should have a problem figuring out which is which.

OMG, you have to be the most organized person I know. Now the challenge will be keeping it that way.

Sorry you lost your pet. I think we all understand how painful that is.

Thank you for all the heartfelt messages about my dog. Very much appreciated!

I actually took pictures of my organized closet and sewing room so I could use it as inspiration to hopefully keep it this organized. So far so good but it's only been a week since I finished organizing.

I'm not done organizing other parts of the house (yet). Too much grief that still needs to be processed.

Happy to report that my inventory system is still intact and working like a charm. I wish I had done this years ago!

Good for you! I am just weeding through a few unused rulers and that is a big enough task for me 😂
