Has anyone sewn anything for Bunnies / Rabbits for comfort?
 

Hi..I would like to make some mats for bunnies in a rescue and have been reading that fleece material is best for them. I was wondering if anyone has made mats or beds for bunnies and if they can tell me what you used. I asked the rescues, and they don't have an answer except they seemed ok with the fleece but did ask about what I would put into the quilt, i.e., stuffing or batting. So I was thinking I could use two pieces of fleece for the top and two for the bottom and put them right sides together and turn out and sew a few lines on top. That way the mat will be soft, but I could avoid batting / stuffing.

Any thoughts would be helpful. The rescues say that the bunnies could use something soft. Here is an example of what I mean. Thanks.

Having been the owner many bunnies, I would be afraid they would chew whatever mat they had. Personally, I would rather mine eat a natural cotton item than something made with micro fibers. As fill filling, I would suggest a light layer of snips, strips and leftovers layered between whatever top and bottom you decide to use. Sewn together as you suggested and sewn the lines to to keep the filling in place. Perhaps an old T shirt in place of the outer fabric? This is what I used to line baby bunny baskets when I doing wildlife rehab work. Just my thoughts.

I agree with Lena, stressing only absolutely natural if you have to, no poly or other manmade fabrics. they make their nests out of their own hair.

Howeverrrrrr .... I'm thinking like the others and would be hesitant on any non-natural fibres.
But what do I know? :)
Maybe they wouldn't nibbles on the man-made fibres? And thus, why not to use the naturals?
But I hardly doubt it! :)

It might be some questions that you should ask the rescue people before you go into mass production.

Thank you all for answering, While it was fun to make the flop n hop beds, I think maybe I will not sew things for bunnies, I would not want to do anything that they might chew. I saw the bunny beds on Etsy and did my own version, some used cotton and some fleece but I will concentrate on other animals. I guess I should not have gone ahead and made a bunch.......yikes,LOL.

Glad that you got it figured out.
It can be frustrating when we have problems with our machines.
(Dealt with that myself today ... hadn't used a feature for a long time, maybe never ... and even when I went back to the manual, I didn't get it figured out easily!)

Those bunny beds would make nice rescue kitty beds. Perhaps see if there is a rescue group near you that could make use of them.
Bunnies teeth never stop growing so they have to chew. It wouldn’t matter what material you use, those bunnies would chew on it. Like I said earlier, I would only want my bunnies chewing on natural materials for safety reasons.
