Raw edges applique for baby quilt?
 

Have any of you every used raw edge applique for a baby quilt? I can imagine lots of cute patterns that could be made with that technique, but wonder how it would hold up with many washings. I like to build durability into my quilts, especially those for children.

Does your machine have the utility stitch? It's the one I use for raw edge.

I used this technique once on one of the first quilts I made. Never again. The mom washed the quilt to death. Although I was glad it was being used, I was so sad to see the appliqués all shredding. I tried repairing it, but I'm sure the repairs didn't hold either. I would not recommend it, unless you know it would be gently used/washed.

I would use the blanket stitch on your machine if you have it. It would enclose the raw edges and should do fine. No personal data on this. I have used it for kid's quilts donated to Project Linus and gifts without anybody saying that they didn't hold up.

I wouldn't babies suck on everything and although they'd be small they'd swollow threads.

No personal experience with it either, but i agree with kamala.

I also would avoid anything that could come off - like buttons or fringes.

I made one for our grandson over 20 years ago. It was raw edge but I zigzagged a tight zigzag all around my Applique after I had machine basted it down. It still looks good today and I know it was washed a lot. I don’t trust the blanket stitch to hold up as well. Just my opinion, for what it’s worth.

The mom washed the quilt to death.

My youngest daughter ruined a double wedding ring quilt she had to have from me. She washed it every week in hot water with bleach along with her sheets. She also ruined an expensive cutting board because she put it in the dishwasher after every use. I promise I did not raise her this way. Either she never paid any attention or I didn't notice she never paid attention.

I made a baby quilt that was pieced whales but the bubbles and eyes were appliqued. I used lightweight fusible and then just a straight stitch close to the edge. Noah worked and worked trying to pick off the eyes. Six years later and lots of use and washes, everything is still attached.
