Lemoyne Star
 

I am looking for the cutting instructions for a traditionally pieced Lemoyne Star block, that finishes at 9 inches. Yes, that means diamonds and Y seams. Mr. Google is NOT being my friend and insists that I need a 12 inch block or should use HSTs. I really hope someone here can help me or point me to a website with the information that I need, before I try following the rather convoluted directions for drawing my own. Thanks in advance.

Lemoyne Star is a traditional pattern. It is pre-drawn into Electric Quilt to any size you want. it is divided into 4 sections, so for a 9" finish, each quarter is 4.5, each subsection needs to be 2.25, which puts the cut corner squares at 2.75.

Here's one I did a couple of years ago using up Easter scraps -- I wanted the practice of the set in seams.

Timed out before I could add it to my first post -- here is a 1/4 block diagram that will finish to 9".

How you cut the parallelograms is up to you. If you are using scraps, I'd make a template. From strips I'd cut strips 2.75"

I realized that in my quarter block diagram, that didn't show the full triangle in the center of the block. I pulled out my handy sheet of graph paper and have it drawn to size, but it's been awhile since I've fired up Electric Quilt so I'll do that and get a PDF of their cutting instructions. Be back in a couple with better info for you :)

Oh gosh! It looks like Electric quilt sets it up as 3 across and so has a bit different parts. That makes the corner squares 3" unfinished...

So talk to me and we'll figure out which variation to go forward on!!

Is this close to what you need? Look at the dimensions which show the cutting sizes for a 9 inch finished block.

Thanks Rhonda, but I think Iceblossom has given me what I need. Thank you Iceblossom!! I am going to try making one with your measurements this afternoon. I'll let you know how it goes.

If your test isn't what you want, I saved an EQ project with the block done as divided in thirds. That makes the corner squares finish at 3", so cut at 3.5". I haven't drawn it out but it should make a sharper point than then 45 degrees in the way I do it.

While they do it without y-seams, it gives you a good visual of the measurements, to figure out the rest.

I am quite frustrated at the moment. Iceblossom, your measurements were spot on. Thank you again. However, I missed a crucial element in the photo of the pattern, that I am trying to reproduce. Here is a link to the photo in question.

You can see that the star 'floats'. I can get the same effect by adding a small border, but it totally throws off the block measurement. The alternate block is nine-9 patches. If done with 1 1/2 inch squares, it will finish at 9 inches. Hence, my search for a 9 inch Lemoyne star.

I guess I could go with an 8 inch star with 1/2 inch border all around. Or I could make my life MUCH easier by using 2 inch squares in the alternate block and a 12 inch Lemoyne star, with a 3/4 inch border around it.

This quilt would be for our LQS's current Challenge and I would like it to be as authentically 1930's as possible. Not that I'd go so far as to hand quit it though or do as heavy quilting as the blogger did! This is going to be a hard decision.

By the way, I've found that going to google and doing a search there for something turns up stuff better than trying to do a search on the quiting board.
