Can we talk pins?

I need new straight pins for quilting. I want them to be two inches long and have glass/ heat resistant ends. What do you use that’s sharp? The ones I have now are ready to be retired.

Clover # 2508 are 2 inches long and very sharp, with iron proof glass heads.

I prefer the Clover # 2506 flat flower head pins because they lay flat (also 2 inches and very sharp), but they are not heat resistant.

Wow, that is a long pin! Especially as today I have been using my teensy appliqué ones! I am still using the original pins I purchased many years ago, but have a “sharps” container where any bent or dull ones get placed. One of these days I will need to replenish my stock.

I am still using the Dritz yellow ball pins, but they are a little short for you. I'd like a slightly thinner diameter, but the price point of the Dritz is attractive to me. I do probably replace my pins about every 5 years but I will sew over them and they bend or whatever and I throw them away if they aren't sharp. I also will sanitize my pins a couple of times a year by putting them in a heat safe bowl, pour boiling water over them, then quickly drain and fluff out on a towel to dry (in seconds). My pin cushion was made by a friend and is wool with raw wool on the side.

I find most flat head pins very heavy -- especially as a heavy pinner where I will have pins every 2" along a border seam. And, as Magicmoonmusings said -- you have to watch hitting some of them with the iron.

I quit using the glass top pins as the heads started falling off after the many years of use. They were not Clover pins. I have switched to T-head pins as I am able to get them picked up easier than my old - glass head pins that lose their heads almost as fast as I look at them. Yes, they are OLD.

I did not know that Clover made glass head pins. Might try them next time I need / want new pins. Where do ya'll buy them from?

You may like Clover # 2510. They are flower flat head pins but much thinner and meant for lightweight fabrics. I do use them for quilting cottons but they bend easily so just be gentle. And like the other flower flat heads they're not heat resistant.

I like Bohin glass head pins the best

I don't know if mine are Clover but I like the yellow flower headed ones. They are flat, seem to stay sharp and they are easy to see when dropped in the carpet! Also the flower is big enough that I have used Sharpie to put numbers on stacks to identify them when piecing. I have the round headed pins but the flower ones are my choice.

I have a pincushion filled with Fons and Porter glass head pins. They are years old and very sharp. I believe it's Clover rebranded. I rarely use pins since the Wonder clips came about.

I am still using my Dritz yellow ball quilting pins that I bought back in the late 90s, I've lost a few to getting bent or rusty but they are still pretty sharp, I bought a newer pack a few years back and they were much thinner, several of the yellow heads had already come off in the package! straight to the garbage!

I have some of the Bohin pins and they are okay, I use the wonder clips as much as I can, I feel like everything has gone down so much in quality with our hobby, across the board with everything, it's very discouraging
