Compost Cookies

These cookies are from the famous Milk Bar eatery in NYC. They've also been called "Kitchen Sink Cookies." I'm going to make them next week, after I go to the dollar store to pick up some of the goodies that go into them. (I am not paying $8 for a bag of chocolate chips at the grocery store.) You can really put just about anything that you want in them. I'm thinking pretzels, chopped up Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, raisins, peanuts and some sort of cookie, broken into pieces.

Those look amazing. Printed the recipe so I can give them a try. Thanks for sharing :-)

I also printed the recipe. I'm always looking for something different for a potluck and this looks like a dessert table winner!! Thanks Tropit.

OMG - you sent me down a rabbit hole. I wanted to know about Milk Bar cookies and found a pile of recipes on the Milk Bar website. Now? My recipe file is a bit thicker and my waistline will probably be so as well.

I know...so dangerous.

I bought some goodies to put into the cookies today at the $ store. They would be "Million Dollar Compost Cookies" if I didn't. I'm going to try to make them up tomorrow. I'll be sure to post the recipe.

I printed the recipe too. About chocolate chips. I buy Tony's Chocolonely big bars
and break it up for chips. The bars have assorted ingredients like pretzels, toffee, honey, almond, dark, white or milk chocolate and of course plain. The bars are great for cookies.

Good idea. I'll have to look for those in the store. I looked at the price of chocolate chips just yesterday...$10.99 for an average sized bag. (Is anyone else seeing these kinds of prices where they live, or is this just California's high cost of living?) I refused to buy them. Instead, I went to the $ store and picked up a couple of candy bars... Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and a Snickers Bar for the cookies...$3 total. I'll chop them up and add them to the dough. It's supposed to rain all day here, so it the perfect day to make these cookies.

Nestles and Hershey's chocolate chips are under $5 for average size. The store brand is under $7 for 28 oz large bag.
I used to live in Southern CA, Huntington Beach. I looked up our house we had there. OMG. It's over a million dollars and it's just a simple ranch style home on a cul de sac. Considered a starter home when we bought it. Too small to be worth over a million.

OK...so I tried making these cookies. Not a great success. Maybe I made some mistakes...probably so. I had to make them in 3 batches because she wanted you to use shiny baking sheets and I only had 1/4 sheet pans that were shiny.

The 1st batch came out of the oven after only 10 minutes and they had spread completely flat, burned on the edges and so greasy, I hesitated to try one. I had to wipe my hands off with 2 different rags to get the grease off. They were also incredibly sweet. I thought that I was going to pass out after the first bite. I'm going to throw this 1st batch out.

For the 2nd batch, I added about a 1/4 C more flour to the dough to give them some body. I also turned down my oven to 350 degrees F and waited a few minutes for it to cool down. This batch still flattened out, but not as bad. I checked on them after only 9.5 minutes and they were done, even though the recipe says to cook them for 13-15 minutes. They were not billowy, not quite as greasy, but still pretty greasy. Overall, they were a little bit better...barely edible.

For the 3rd batch, I added another tablespoon of flour and put them in the 350 oven for about 10-11 minutes. this batch was closest to what was shown in the recipe picture. They tasted better, not super greasy, but I'll have to go on a diet, or throw up, I don't know which, after eating 3 of these.

I went over the recipe again in my mind and I cannot figure out where I made a mistake. I even looked at my measuring cups again, just to make sure that I used the correct ones. I use my oven every day and it is usually right on temperature, but it could be off. I chilled them for a 1/2 hour, like the recipe said. I honestly don't know what I did wrong.

I think that if I made these again, I would reduce the butter to 1/2 - 3/4 Cup and cut back on the sugar a bit. The chunky goodies sort of melted away, but they tasted good in a vague sort of way. I'm not into super sweet stuff, nor greasy foods.I love the concept of these cookies, but maybe this just isn't my recipe.
